TWO YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT TO TWO PRIVATE PERSONS AND A DSP OF CBI FOR EVASION OF CUSTOMS DUTY
The Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai has convicted Sh. G. Vinod Kumar Gollapudi & Sh. Natha Venkata Vathsa Vardhan, both private persons and Sh. K.A.A. Salaam, DSP, CBI for evasion of customs duty. Sh. K.A.A. Salaam has been sentenced to undergo two years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.20,000/- and Sh. G. Vinod Kumar Gollapudi & Sh. Natha Venkata Vathsa Vardhan(both private persons) to undergo two years RI with fine of Rs.10,000/- each.
CBI had registered a case U/s 120-B r/w 420 of IPC, Section 132 & 135 of Customs Act, 1962 and Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. It was alleged that the accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy, during February, 2011 at Chennai to cheat Customs Department for not declaring the dutiable goods in the Customs Disembarkation/Declaration cards brought from abroad and evading customs duty in connivance with Sh.K.A.A. Salaam. An alleged loss of Rs.Two lakh (approx) was caused to Customs Department.
After investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet against four accused persons. The Trial court found three accused persons guilty and acquitted one private person from the charges.
