Naresh Dilawari Vs Charanjit Singh Oberoi (Supreme Court of India)
The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the authenticity of an academic degree belonging to an advocate, Naresh Dilawari. This decision stems from a case where the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana submitted evidence suggesting Dilawari’s Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from Magadh University was forged.
The court’s action follows a communication from the Controller of Examinations at Magadh University, which stated that the mark sheet and degree certificate for Naresh Dilawari, from the 1991 examination, were “found forged and not issued from the University.”
In response, the petitioner, Naresh Dilawari, submitted a photocopy of his degree and countered the university’s claim by suggesting that the university’s records were “torn,” making verification difficult.
Given the serious nature of the allegation and the conflicting statements, the Supreme Court, in its order dated August 1, 2025, decided to entrust the investigation to the CBI. The court’s order states that the CBI will investigate whether the B.Com degree is “genuine or forged.” The Director of the CBI has been directed to appoint an officer to conduct the probe and submit a report by November 30, 2025. The case is scheduled for a hearing on December 9, 2025, to consider the report.
