The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notification on May 29, 2025, amending its previous notification from January 10, 2017. This amendment, made under the powers granted by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, designates a revised list of laboratories authorized to function as referral food laboratories across India. These laboratories are empowered to carry out specified functions related to food safety testing and analysis according to their valid scope of accreditation. The updated list, replacing previous tables, includes 22 laboratories, such as National Food Laboratory branches in Kolkata, Ghaziabad, JNPT Navi Mumbai, and Chennai, as well as various CSIR institutes, Spices Board Quality Evaluation Laboratories, and other specialized food testing facilities nationwide. This notification aims to consolidate and update the official network of referral laboratories responsible for ensuring food safety standards.

No. QA-12013/7/2021-QA-FSSAI.—In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 43 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (34 of 2006), the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India hereby makes the following amendment in the notification number S.O. 97(E) dated the 10th January, 2017, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part-II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii) on 12th January, 2017, and hereby notifies the following laboratories to carryout functions of referral food laboratory all over India and as per valid scope of accreditation, namely:-
