SC restricts cultivation of cash crops in reserved forest land -The Supreme Court has stated that cultivation of areca nut, coconut, cashew, black pepper and other cash crops are non-forest activities which cannot be allowed in reserved forests according to its rulings in the forest cases. Therefore, the Karnataka government was justified in cancelling the lease of such cultivators in the state, the court stated in the case, K Balakrishnan Nambiar vs State of Karnataka. The appeal of the cultivators, whose lease deeds were cancelled as they were engaged in non-forest activity, were dismissed.
