Choosing the right domain during articleship is one of the most important decisions in the journey of a Chartered Accountancy student. For CA Foundation and CA Intermediate students, this phase is not just about completing a mandatory training period but about building a strong professional foundation that shapes future career opportunities. Among the various domains available, Statutory Audit stands out as one of the most enriching and comprehensive fields for an aspiring Chartered Accountant.

Being associated with the Statutory Audit domain during my articleship, I have had the opportunity to explore multiple areas of the finance and accounting profession. One of the biggest advantages of statutory audit is that it does not limit an article assistant to a single function. Instead, it provides exposure to almost every important aspect of a business, including financial reporting, accounting standards, taxation, internal controls, regulatory compliances, corporate laws, risk assessment, and business operations.

A statutory auditor’s role goes far beyond simply verifying numbers in the financial statements. It involves understanding the client’s business model, identifying key risks, evaluating internal control systems, analysing financial trends, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and standards. This wide-ranging exposure helps an article assistant develop a practical understanding of how businesses operate and how different departments are interconnected.

During my journey in statutory audit, I realised that every audit engagement brings a new learning experience. Working with companies from different industries allows one to understand diverse business environments, challenges, and financial practices. This variety not only enhances technical knowledge but also improves analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and professional judgement—qualities that are essential for a successful Chartered Accountant.

For CA Foundation and CA Intermediate students who are still deciding their path, I strongly recommend considering the statutory audit domain for their articleship. While other domains provide specialised knowledge in specific areas, statutory audit offers a broader perspective and acts as a stepping stone to various career opportunities such as external audit, internal audit, risk advisory, financial reporting, finance management, and consultancy.

Moreover, statutory audit develops the habit of professional skepticism, attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work under challenging timelines. It also provides regular interaction with client management and senior professionals, which enhances confidence and professional communication.

In conclusion, choosing statutory audit during articleship is not merely selecting a domain—it is choosing a learning platform that provides exposure to almost every aspect of the financial and business world. My experience in this field has helped me gain practical insights across multiple areas and has strengthened my understanding of the profession. For every CA student aspiring to build a versatile and strong career foundation, statutory audit can be one of the best choices to begin their professional journey.
