JSW Steel Limited Vs Sanjay Singhal & Ors. (Supreme Court of India)

Supreme Court of India has issued an order of status quo regarding proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in the case of JSW Steel Limited versus Sanjay Singhal & Ors. The decision came during the hearing of a special leave petition filed by JSW Steel Limited.

The appellant, JSW Steel, sought intervention against a judgment delivered by the court on May 2, 2025, in the case of Kalyani Transco vs. Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd. & Ors. (Civil Appeal No. 1808 of 2020). JSW Steel’s counsel, Mr. Neeraj Kishan Kaul, informed the court that the limitation period for filing a review petition against the Kalyani Transco judgment had not yet expired, and steps were underway to file such a petition.

The appellant argued that any immediate implementation of directions issued in the Kalyani Transco case would jeopardize the consideration of their forthcoming review petition. In response, the Supreme Court, without expressing an opinion on the merits, granted the status quo order to prevent future legal complications and ensure justice.

The interim arrangement will remain in effect pending the filing and disposal of the review petition(s) by JSW Steel. The court noted the appellant’s submission that the review petition(s) would be filed within the stipulated limitation period and in accordance with law. The appeal has been disposed of in these terms.
