Dear Colleague

The Hon’ble Union Finance Minister during her visit to NACIN Palasamudram last week on the occasion of World Environment Day underscored the Government’s commitment to sustainable development by planting saplings native to the region under the Miyawaki method of afforestation, joined by children from nearby government schools and community leaders. This symbolic act of environmental stewardship highlighted the importance of rapid green cover and community participation. Further enriching the ecological and cultural fabric of the campus, the Hon’ble Minister dedicated six biodiversity gardens—Chakra Garden, Paavana Vana (Sacred Woods), Panchagyanendra Vana (Sensory Garden), Kamala Vana (Lotus Garden), Asoka Vana, and the Zen Garden (Japanese Rock Garden). Spread across 5.45 acres, these gardens beautifully intertwine elements of nature, tradition, and mindfulness, offering a serene and reflective environment for all. The Hon’ble Finance Minister also appreciated the passionate efforts of Dr. Ezhilmathi K, ADG, NACIN, in thoughtfully conceptualizing and bringing to life the impressive landscaping of the campus. We are fortunate to have such motivated officers in the formative years of the academy.

Another highlight of the visit was the interaction of the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister with the Officer Trainees of the 76th batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes). In an inspiring and candid session, the Finance Minister shared reflections from her personal journey in public life and articulated her expectations from the young officers as they prepare to begin to serve the nation. Underscoring the pivotal role of professional competence and personal integrity, she urged the trainees to remain steadfast in their commitment to public service and uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct. I am sure the interaction left a lasting impression on the young officers, reaffirming their resolve to serve with dedication and a sense of purpose.

“Speak the truth. Uphold righteousness.”

This timeless exhortation from the Taittriya Upanishad aptly captures the essence of the Hon’ble Finance Minister’s message—anchoring public service in truth, integrity, and duty.

Infrastructure development has been a key focus area for CBIC in recent times, aligning with the evolving needs of a modern tax administration. In a significant milestone, the state-of-the-art Headquarters building of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in New Delhi was inaugurated last week by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, in the august presence of the Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Finance. In her keynote address, the Finance Minister urged officers to embrace the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s clarion call of “Reform, Perform, and Transform”. Spread over 6,200 sq. metres, the new headquarters reflects DRI’s future-ready vision—integrating cutting-edge operational infrastructure with sustainable and inclusive features.

CBIC has always been at the forefront of adopting technology to enhance governance and service delivery. The launch of eOffice on 15th June 2020 marked a major stride in transforming our internal administrative processes. Over the past five years, eOffice has brought in greater efficiency, transparency, and accountability across the Department. It has streamlined file movement and simplified record-keeping. As we move forward, I encourage all formations to continue leveraging the platform to its fullest potential—particularly the MIS reports module for effective monitoring and timely disposal of work. With its enthusiastic adoption of the platform, CBIC has emerged as one of the leading users of eOffice across the Government and the credit goes to each one of you!

Till next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
