The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) has highlighted key developments in its latest communication. The Ahmedabad Zonal Unit of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) uncovered a GST evasion of Rs. 18.10 crore by a real estate developer. The investigation revealed that the developer underreported property sale values and wrongfully availed a concessional GST rate of 1% instead of 5% by misclassifying transactions under affordable housing. This action reflects ongoing efforts to ensure tax compliance in the real estate sector.

Additionally, the CBIC actively participated in post-Union Budget 2025 discussions, engaging with stakeholders and media to clarify tax proposals. Meanwhile, the CGST Ranchi Zone organized a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) workshop to equip officers with emergency response skills. Conducted by a cardiologist, the session saw participation from over 200 officers, with 120 receiving hands-on training. These initiatives reflect CBIC’s focus on tax enforcement and employee welfare.

DO No. 06/News Letter/CH(IC)/ 2025 Dated: 10th February, 2025

Dear Colleague

Khushwant Singh, the renowned Indian author, wrote about Delhi’s weather in February in his work ‘Delhi Through the Seasons’ – “By the middle of February Delhi puts on its very best clothes. Gardens, parks and roundabouts are a blaze of colour.” The blossoming of flowers is a reminder of the pleasant weather this time of the year. Recently, Delhi’s iconic Amrit Udyan also welcomes visitors with its breathtaking floral display – the vibrant tulips, multi-hued roses and numerous other exquisite seasonal blooms.

Much like the flourishing gardens in Delhi, the Union Budget 2025 has brought with it an atmosphere of positivity and promise, emboldening confidence in India’s economic trajectory. To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the tax proposals, the Board participated in multiple post-Budget interactions last week, engaging with stakeholders as well as media to address key concerns and provide greater clarity.

The DGGI Ahmedabad Zonal Unit has detected a GST evasion of Rs. 18.10 crore by a real estate developer engaged in the construction of residential and commercial units. Acting on gathered intelligence, the unit uncovered a suppression of actual transaction values and wrongful availing of concessional rate of GST. The investigation revealed that the developer was underreporting the sale value of properties in official documents while collecting higher amounts from buyers through cash transactions and wrongfully availing benefits meant for affordable housing by paying GST at the concessional rate of 1% instead of 5%. Wonderful detection!

The Chief Commissioner’s Office, CGST Ranchi Zone organised a CPR

(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) workshop to introduce a crucial life-saving skill to its officers and staff. The session, led by a renowned cardiologist, witnessed an overwhelming participation of over 200 officers and staff, with approximately 120 officers receiving hands-on training provided by the medical team. For many, this would have been a first-time experience. Equipping personnel with essential emergency response skills is appreciable.

Wishing you a lovely week ahead!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
