Name may not have mattered much to Juliet, who famously said in William Shakespeare’s epic ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but it seems to mean a lot for the corporate world.
As the year draws to an end, it emerges that at least 152 listed companies in the country changed their names during 2010 — the maximum number of name changes in a decade — and such companies include those from big business houses like Tatas, Ambanis, Bajaj and Modis.
In many cases, names were changed to reflect the changes in the business profiles of these companies including due to merger and acquisitions.
Also, there have been changes like writing the registered name in all-capital letters or just spelling out suffixes like ‘Ltd’ as ‘Limited’ and not just the acronym.
