As the historic ‘Delhi Declaration’ was unanimously adopted by the G-20, the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for bridging the trust deficit seems to have garnered appreciation and struck resonance with the nations representing about 85 percent of the world’s GDP. The success of India’s G-20 presidency is truly the success of India’s age-old ideals of inclusion and welfare. No wonder, the Hon’ble Prime Minister quoted the inscription on the Ashokan pillar, which reads:

Meaning, the welfare and happiness of humanity should always be ensured.

To my mind, the confluence of ideas and views during the G-20 summit on wide-ranging issues such as territorial integrity and sovereignty, energy transition and sustainable development, trade and investment, among others, is bound to increase the role of CBIC in the times to come. We have to be fully equipped to meet the vision of resilient and inclusive global value chains along with reliable logistics for trade.

During the week, I came across the news of the seizure made by the officers of the Delhi Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence of 19.6 lakh sticks of foreign origin cigarettes valued at Rs. 2.93 Crore which were smuggled into India. The manner in which the officers worked to identify the exact go downs without any identifiable address is laudable. In another case, the officers of the Customs Preventive Zone, Tiruchirappalli, intercepted a two wheeler and recovered 14.8 Kgs of smuggled Gold valued at Rs. 8.92 Crore. Keep up the good work!

During the weekend, I reflected upon the hard work done by our field officers which often goes unappreciated. Your dedication and diligence ensure that the wheels of commerce turn smoothly, revenues are collected for essential public services, and the economic interests of our nation are safeguarded. Remember that every assessment, every decision, and every transaction you handle has a ripple effect on millions of lives. Embrace the opportunity to make a positive impact, foster transparency and fairness, and contribute to the country’s growth story. Keep pushing the boundaries, keep striving for excellence, and let your passion for service shine bright! I would encourage the senior officers in the department to be liberal in recognizing the good work done by the officers at all levels.

Till next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
