DO No. 07/CH(IC)/2023 Dated: 25th May, 2023

We all are part of an organization, which is much larger than the sum of its parts. While we may have our aspirations and expectations about what the organization owes us as professionals, the needs of the organization shall always remain paramount. This is particularly true of public service or Government organizations. The internalization of this principle is imperative not only if the organization has to thrive but also if its members have to remain happy and contented.

The “call of duty” whether as a one-time job assigned to us or a posting entrusted to us should be a “badge of honour”. At times it may appear that you have not been judged properly or your potential not acknowledged but, in my view, the right attitude would still be to accept it and treat it as an opportunity to learn a new skill or perform a new role.

My experience shows that those who have approached unexpected change with this mindset have emerged stronger and more enriched as individuals/officers. It would be unfortunate if most of us were to characterize this as injustice and live under a shadow of hurt, rejection and despondency.

As you would often have heard me say there is plenty of scope for “making a difference” and improving things regardless of which location or charge you are assigned. I acknowledge that many a times, personal problems or issues could appear to be so daunting that they may prevent you from making an objective assessment of the situation. But even those could be overcome with the right attitude.

A point must be made that we may face such a situation very infrequently in our careers or few of us may end up facing it. That is also something we should not lose sight of.

Moving on, on the anti-smuggling side, last week was rather eventful. Sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) interdicted more than 18.1 kg of Ambergris [valued in excess of Z31 Crore] at the Tuticorin Coast. Cases such as these underscore the vital role played by our officers in protecting the flora and fauna of the country.

On the anti-evasion side, officers of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) detected a case of failure to discharge GST liability on the commission paid to agents under reverse charge mechanism. The amount evaded is estimated to about Rs. 126 Crores. Sustained investigation and consultations with the taxpayer subsequently led to the recovery of Rs. Rs 114 Crores. Kudos to the officers for their excellent work.

Around the country, schools and colleges would be going into a recess for the summer. For those of you with school/college going kids, this is perhaps a time to see a bit more of them and to make more wonderful memories!

Till next week!

Yours Sincerely,

(Vivek Johri)
