An organization is often defined by its leadership. Yet leadership itself is often interpreted loosely as a study in popularity, power, showmanship or knowledge. While, leaders may have these things, these by themselves are not the only ingredients of effective leadership.
W.C.H. Prentice, the feted American academic, defined leadership as the accomplishment of a set of goals through the directed actions of a group of people. The ability to successfully marshal one’s team towards a common goal is the hallmark of a leader. A great leader is one who can do so day after day, and year after year and in a wide variety of circumstances.
Their unique achievement is primarily a human and social one which stems from an understanding of their fellow workers and the alignment of their individual goals to the organizational goals.
In doing so, it is imperative for a leader to understand what motivates an individual. While reward and punishment are normally used as motivators, these can only be effective within limits. Motivations such as the need for personal growth, prestige, independence, achievement, love ambition, patriotism and peer recognition are often more durable and more powerful.
Just like a music conductor, the role of a leader is to understand, interpret and elevate the performance of each member of the ensemble so that the resultant total is far greater than the sum of the parts. This would be possible only when the leader himself enunciates the organizational goals or expectations, clearly internalizes them and conveys them consistently through action and speech. Converting colleagues so as to align their goals with those of the organization calls for patience, persistence and hard work. But giving up is not an option!
On the anti-smuggling front, last week, officers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai interdicted 500 Grams of Cocaine valued at about Rs. 5 Crores concealed in the baggage of an international arriving passenger. Kudos to the officers for another fine detection.
Moving ahead, as a token of our social commitment to the Palasamudram village and its residents, the site of the upcoming National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACIN) had planned to provide drinking water the nearby residents. One borewell has been already been dug and groundwater survey is underway for another.
It is also planned to conduct an eye screening and cataract surgery camp for the villagers. Further, workers, especially women workers, from the neighboring villages have been engaged for unskilled/semi-skilled work in the campus. This is just one way for us to add value to our environment.
Before I sign off for the week, I would like to mention about a book, Morning Musings: Sutras for Success & Happiness, written by Sh. Mahendra Ranga, an officer of the 1990 Batch.
