Update on 27/07/2021 – Corrigendum: COVID-19 Toll on Children in Delhi – 5640 number of children who lost one parent and 273 number of Orphan

The Department of Women and Child Development, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has conveyed that the information concerning the number of Orphan and the number of children who lost one parent due to COVID-19 was wrongly sent inadvertently and the correct information is as:

Corrigendum

In continuation to this Department’s earlier letter vide no. F. No. 61(RTI Matter)/16/DD (CPU)/DWCD/ 2021-22/6309-10 dated 14th July 2021, it is to inform that the information regarding the total number of children who have become orphans or have lost one parent or abandoned due to COVID-19, was inadvertently sent. The same may be read as under:-

a) 273 number of Orphans children instead of 5640

b) 5640 number of children who lost one Parent instead of 273

The Department of Women and Child Development, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has informed that as per the details provided by DCPOs, CWCs, ICDS field functionaries and others, 5640 number of Orphan and 273 number of children who lost one parent due to COVID-19 have been reported. 

The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India vide order dated 07.06.2021 in the matter of ‘In Re Contagion of COVID 19 Virus in Children Protection Homes’ SMWP(C) No. 4 of 2020, had recorded the following, which puts a serious challenge, particularly for the capital city Delhi as is being found lagging behind in such exercise till date:

“The information provided by the State Governments/Union Territories on the ‘Bal Swaraj’ Portal upto 05.06.2021 shows that there are 30,071 children who have become orphans or have lost one parent or abandoned. The break-up given in the affidavit filed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is that there are 3,621 orphans, 26,176 children who have lost one parent and 274 children who have been abandoned. The State-wise data that is given in the affidavit filed by NCPCR shows that NCT of Delhi and the State of West Bengal have not uploaded the correct information.”
