Last date for compliance of CPE Hours requirement for the year 2016 has been extended from 31st Dec 2016 to 31st Jan 2017.

ICAI has stipulated different type of requirements of CPE hours for different type of members based on age, COP holding, residential status, etc, for the current block period of 3 years (Jan 2014 to Dec 2016), as under:

A. CPE Hours Requirement based on Age / COP Holding / Residence

i) CPE Hours Requirement for Members below age of 60, holding CoP and residing in India:

Basic CPE requirement is 90 hours learning over three years, including a minimum of 20 hours structured learning in each calendar year. Remaining 30 hours learning can be completed through structured or unstructured learning programs of CPE.

In other words, all the members (aged less than 60 years) who are holding Certificate of Practice (except all those members who are residing abroad) are required to:

a) Complete at least 90 CPE credit hours in a rolling period of three-years.

b) Complete minimum 20 CPE credit hours of structured learning in each calendar year.

c) Out of the 90 CPE Credit Hours as mentioned above, 30 CPE credit hours can be completed either through Structured or Unstructured learning (as per Member’s choice).

ii) CPE Hours Requirement for Members below age of 60 but Not holding CoP or Members not residing in India (irrespective of age):

Basic CPE requirement is 45 hours of structured or unstructured learning over three years, including a minimum of 10 hours structured / unstructured learning in each calendar year.

In other words, all the members (aged less than 60 years) who are not holding Certificate of Practice and all the members who are residing abroad (whether holding Certificate of Practice or not) are required to:

a) Complete at least 45 CPE credit hours either structured or unstructured learning (as per Member’s choice) in rolling period of three-years

b) Complete minimum 10 CPE credit hours of either structured or unstructured learning (as per member’s choice) in each calendar year.

iii) CPE Hours Requirement for Members (age 60 & above) holding CoP:

Basic CPE requirement is 70 hours of structured or unstructured learning over three years, including a minimum of 10 / 20 / 20 hours structured / unstructured learning in calendar year 2014 / 2015/ 2016.

In other words, all the members (aged 60 years & above) who are holding Certificate of Practice, are required to:

a) Complete at least an aggregate of 70 CPE credit hours of either Structured or Unstructured Learning (as per member’s choice) in a rolling period of three years

b) Complete minimum of 10 CPE credit hours being an aggregate of either Structured or Unstructured Learning in the first calendar year i.e. 2014.

c) Complete minimum of 20 CPE credit hours being an aggregate of either Structured or Unstructured Learning (as per member’s choice) in the second and third calendar years i.e. 2015 & 2016.

B. Members of ICAI exempted from compliance with CPE Hours Requirements:

The following class of members are exempted from compliance with the CPE hours requirement for the block period of 2014-2016:

a) All the members (aged 60 years and above) who are not holding Certificate of Practice.

b) Judges of Supreme Court, High Court and Tribunal

c) Members of Parliament/MLAs/MLCs

d) Governors of States

e) Centre and State Civil Services

f) Entrepreneurs [owners of Business (manufacturing) organizations other than professional services]

g) Judicial officers
