The Government of India, through Notification No. 6 (RE-99) 1997-2002, amended the import restrictions for certain stones under the ITC(HS) Classifications. The notification specifies that importation of certain stones, including crude or roughly trimmed marble, polished slabs, and granite, is restricted and can only be done under a Special Import Licence (SIL). The import restrictions apply to various stone types, with specific CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value thresholds for different forms, such as blocks, slabs, and tiles. For instance, import of marble blocks and slabs is permitted only if the CIF value per metric tonne is above USD 300 for blocks and USD 450 for slabs. Similarly, polished marble and granite slabs, blocks, and tiles are allowed under SIL with varying CIF thresholds, such as USD 700 per metric tonne for blocks and USD 3240 per cubic meter for tiles. This amendment was issued in public interest and aimed at regulating the import of these materials based on their value, aligning with the Government’s foreign trade policy.

S.O (E) – In exercise of powers conferred under section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 read with paragraph 1.3 and 4.1 of the Export and Import Policy, 1997-2002, the Central Government hereby makes the following amendments in the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items , 1997-2002 published on 31st March, 1997 (RE-98) as amended from time to time, namely –
