New Delhi August 29, 2007-  Making things easier for the business process outsourcing (BPO) units, other call centres and the manufacturing sector, the government is likely to amend Section 66 of the Factories Act, 1948 to enable these entities to put women on night shifts, particularly between 7 pm and 6 am, which is otherwise prohibited under the Act.

The Cabinet is expected to take up a proposal for amendment of the Act in its meeting slated for Thursday.

The ITeS sector, which includes the buoyant BPO and KPO sectors, have been witnessing a steady increase in the number of women workforce.

According to industry figures, the percentage of female population in the IT industry, particularly in major IT companies like Infosys, has grown steadily from 17% in March 2001 to 24% in June 2005.
