The Income Tax department is planning a drive against tax evaders in the Kashmir Valley and to begin with will use “coercive” tools in the law to get people to file annual returns on their income.
“IT department has constituted a search wing, which will investigate the progress in the business of those who don’t pay taxes,” Chief Commissioner of Income Tax G R Sofi said during an interaction here.
The department collected Rs 120 crore as income tax from the Valley in 2008-09, and Rs 110 crore the previous year.
This pales in comparison to Maharashtra’s Rs 1,43,587 crore, followed by Karnataka Rs 1,17,868 crore, Tamil Nadu Rs 12,562 crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs 9,077 crore and Gujarat at Rs 7,781 crore in 2008-09.

A large team of officers and staff who had gone by a “top secret” mission, with a lot of fanfare and by a chartered plane, to Srinagar in 1976 or so for search operations, were received at the airport itself by a booing public. When they finally converged at the designated location, they were surrounded by a very large crowd ready to murder everybody-and, im fact, many ladies were mauled and injured, while the male members were beaten up mercilessly. Many escaped the wrath just by running away minus their clothes.
One hopes that the deptt. still has record of the events archived somewhere-and those were the days of very bright, courageous, devoted, scrupulously honest and young officers, and staff too.
