In a significant development for India’s electric vehicle sector, Amazon and Tata Motors have announced a strategic collaboration to deploy 3,000 electric trucks across Amazon’s transportation network in India. This marks the largest deployment of electric trucks by an e-commerce company in the country, underscoring Amazon’s commitment to expanding fleet electrification beyond last-mile delivery. The electric trucks, supplied by Tata Motors, will facilitate the movement of customer shipments between facilities, cities, and along national freight corridors.
The initiative was launched in Delhi, with the first batch of Tata electric trucks flagged off by notable dignitaries, including Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Minister of Heavy Industries & Steel, and Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Transport & IT, Government of Delhi. The collaboration aims to address key barriers to electric vehicle adoption, leveraging Tata Motors’ engineering and manufacturing capabilities alongside Amazon’s extensive logistics network and freight demand.
The rollout will commence during India’s festive season, a peak period for e-commerce and retail supply chains, with initial operations focusing on Delhi. The deployment will subsequently expand to major national highways, including the 2,800-km Delhi–Bengaluru–Chennai corridor, which spans seven states and connects six of India’s largest e-commerce regions. This expansion will be supported by dedicated charging infrastructure developed in partnership with Yahhvi, a charging infrastructure provider.
This collaboration aligns with India’s broader push towards cleaner mobility and freight electrification, supported by government initiatives such as the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Industry leaders and government officials have praised the partnership as a significant step towards sustainable urban logistics and improved air quality, particularly in cities like Delhi.
Analysts view this partnership as a pivotal moment for India’s electric vehicle market, highlighting the potential for large-scale adoption of electric trucks. The initiative not only supports Amazon’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 but also positions Tata Motors as a key player in the country’s transition to electric mobility. The collaboration is expected to set a precedent for future initiatives aimed at decarbonising transportation and enhancing the sustainability of logistics operations in India.
