Tata Power, a leading integrated power company in India, has announced a strategic partnership with Norwegian renewable energy firm Ocean Sun to introduce an innovative membrane-based floating solar technology in India. The agreement was formalised during the 2nd India–EFTA Prosperity Summit, highlighting the strengthening ties between India and Norway in the realm of clean energy and technological advancement.

The collaboration will initiate with a pilot project at Tata Power’s Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra, featuring a capacity of approximately 300 kWp. This pilot aims to assess the performance and reliability of Ocean Sun’s unique floating solar technology under Indian conditions. The project will also explore the technology’s cost competitiveness and scalability, providing valuable insights for potential future deployments.

India presents a significant opportunity for floating solar technology, with the National Institute of Solar Energy estimating a potential of over 102 GWp. Such initiatives are crucial as the country seeks to expand its renewable energy capacity. The Mulshi project is expected to contribute to building a robust evidence base for the wider adoption of floating solar solutions, complementing the existing ground-mounted and rooftop solar infrastructure.

Ocean Sun’s technology distinguishes itself from conventional floating solar systems by using a hydro-elastic membrane to support solar PV modules directly on the water surface. This design promises to simplify transportation and installation while potentially enhancing energy generation through a cooling effect provided by the water. The pilot will evaluate this technology against traditional solutions, focusing on key parameters such as energy generation, reliability, and commercial viability.

Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, highlighted the importance of innovation in accelerating India’s clean energy transition. He expressed optimism that the collaboration with Ocean Sun would generate valuable insights into the technology’s potential to deliver scalable and cost-effective clean power solutions. Kristian Tørvold, CEO of Ocean Sun, emphasised the significance of local execution capabilities in navigating the complexities of the Indian market, expressing confidence in Tata Power’s expertise.

The partnership marks a pivotal moment for India’s floating solar sector, which is poised to play an increasingly important role in the nation’s renewable energy landscape. As the demand for sustainable energy solutions grows, such collaborations are expected to drive technological advancements and foster international investment in India’s renewable energy ecosystem.
