The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, through a notification dated April 6, 2026, amended its earlier 2021 notification to expand the jurisdiction of designated Central Food Safety Officers under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The amendment specifically includes major international airports within the operational areas of certain officers, namely Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata airports. This change ensures that food safety oversight extends explicitly to airport premises, strengthening regulatory supervision in high-risk and high-traffic zones. The notification was issued under statutory powers conferred by Section 10(5) read with Section 37 of the Act, thereby formalizing the inclusion of airports within enforcement jurisdiction. The amendment builds upon previous updates, including the last modification in August 2025, and aims to enhance monitoring, compliance, and enforcement of food safety standards at critical transit hubs across India.
