A top Income Tax officer and his chartered accountant aide were arrested by CBI on the charge of accepting bribe of Rs 2.20 lakh from a software engineer for showing an official favour.  The accused, R P Meena, commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) and his aide U P Pai were arrested last night for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 2.20 lakh from the complainant working in a private firm, said joint director of CBI, Rishiraj Singh.
The bribe was sought by the accused to give a closure report in an income tax scrutiny for the assessment year 2006-2007.

According to CBI’s Anti-corruption Bureau unit, Pai was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount from the complainant on behalf of the IT commissioner in Shivala restaurant near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in South Mumbai.

These days, CBI is very loosely termed as Chor Bachao Institute . This is a case of catching a small fry whereas big elephants are passing off just as usual or they are let go off without even too much of effort. Moreover the general view that CIT(A) does not get involved in these petty matters is quite correct

The government should put a full stop to the near monopolistic statutory support extended to CAs and give a level playing field to other professionals to ensure healthy competition

He took low amount ‘n’ no of people that is almost all people are taking Lakhs of Rupees other wise how they lead luxuary life, if you observe any ITO or higher Rank their houses will be in posh area and this is known every body as per my opinion this is petty case. if CBI raid all the houses of Beauro crats every body will be caught wiht huge networth

If investigaing agencies dare to bare the corruption nexus of various stakeholders, they need to target only the CAs of suspected ones. These professional breeds are the brain behind all the financial mis-deeds due to monopilstic statutory backing they enjoy in the field of various financial certification/audit etc.And its not surprising that a sense of smartness being developed to play with the rule of law.

A very great job done by the CBI. It is necessary now to investigate how much the commissioner had paid for getting a posting to Mumbai (the current going rate is not less that several lakhs) and to whom it was paid. It is also necessary to enquire as to how much he paid for this particular posing.

The news item is badly reported.
Firstly, CIT(A) does not deal with the kind of matters mentioned in the news item.
U.S. Pai, Chartered Accountant can by no means be called ‘aide’ of the CIT(A).

It appears to be a case of criminal conspiracy to wrongly trap Shri RP Meena. Or may be, CBI and you have drafted the news item incomeptently.
