On October 25, 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against five individuals, including the former Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (PCIT) for Patna and Dhanbad, in connection with a bribery case involving Rs 10 lakh. The investigation began after allegations emerged that the PCIT was soliciting and accepting illegal payments from various income tax assessees in exchange for undue benefits, representing an abuse of his official capacity. On August 26, 2024, the CBI conducted a sting operation, during which the PCIT and a private individual were apprehended while exchanging the bribe amount at the Ayakar Bhavan office in Patna. The investigation subsequently revealed the involvement of three additional individuals, who were also arrested in connection with the scheme. The charges filed highlight serious misconduct within the income tax administration.

CBI FILES CHARGESHEET AGAINST 05 ACCUSED INCLUDING THEN PRINCIPAL COMMISSIONER OF INCOME TAX (PATNA & DHANBAD) AND 04 PRIVATE PERSONS IN A CASE RELATED TO Rs 10 LAKH BRIBERY

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed chargesheet on 25.10.2024 against 05 accused including then Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (PCIT), Patna, Bihar and 04 private persons in case related to bribery of Rs 10 lakh.

On the basis of the information disclosing commission of a cognizable offence, CBI had registered a case on 26.08.2024 on allegations that accused was demanding and accepting illegal gratification from different assessees of Income Tax, under his jurisdiction to cause undue benefit to them by abuse of his official position. It was also alleged that there were several conduits who were working on behalf of then Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Patna & Dhanbad).

CBI had laid a trap on 26.08.2024 when accused then Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (PCIT), Patna, Bihar and a private person were intercepted and detained while transacting the bribe amount of Rs. 10 lakh in the office of Income Tax at Ayakar Bhavan, Patna. Further, role of three more accused also came to the fore who too were arrested besides the said then Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (PCIT) and the aforesaid private person, caught during trap proceedings.
