CBI ARRESTS AN INCOME TAX OFFICER FOR ACCEPTING BRIBE OF RS. 60,000/-

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested an Income Tax Officer, Ward No. 1, Gurgaon (Haryana) for demanding & accepting a bribe of Rs. 60,000/- from the complainant.
A Case was registered U/s 7 of PC Act, 1988 against Income Tax Officer, Ward No.1, Gurgaon on the allegations of demanding a bribe of Rs. 60,000/- from the complainant. The complainant (a Businessman) has alleged in the complaint that during the assessment year 2010-11, there were deposits/withdrawals of more than Rs. 10 lakh and he had not filed the Income Tax Return for the said period as he was claiming benefit of Section 44 AF (presumptive income) of Income Tax Act. In this regard, a notice was served to him and in response, he visited Income Tax office and submitted relevant documents. Subsequently, his case was transferred to ITO, Gurgaon and a notice dated 10.10.2017 u/s 142(1) was received by him asking therein to submit required details for the assessment year 2010-2011. The complainant visited office of said Income Tax Officer, Ward-1(1), Gurgaon and after meeting, the accused demanded a bribe of Rs. 60,000 for closing the assessment and for not imposing penalty under Income Tax Act. It was further alleged that during the meeting, the ITO also handed over him another notice for further details and asked him to attend the office.
CBI laid a trap wherein the Income Tax Officer was caught red handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs. 60,000/- from the complainant. Searches were conducted at residential premises of accused in New Delhi which led to recovery of documents pertaining to properties, investment and LIC policies etc.
The arrested accused will be produced today in the Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Panchkula.
