Q1. What is the Tally Data Migration Tool? How does it help?
Answer: The Tally Data Migration Tool is an efficient migration tool that primarily helps you to migrate and restore your company data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9. It works with the Tally 9.exe file. The Data Migration Tool also allows the migration of TCP (Tally Compliant Product) files.

Q2. When I install Tally 9, will I be able to continue accessing/ working with Tally 7.2 data, without migrating the same to Tally 9?
Answer: No. Once Tally 9 is installed, you cannot access Tally 7.2 data. You must migrate Tally 7.2 data to Tally 9 in order to access / work on the same in Tally 9.

Q3: What happens if an error occurs during data migration from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer: Data migration will not take place if an error occurs during the migration process. For further clarification on data migration errors, contact Tally Customer Support.

Q4. How do I migrate data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer:
1. Install Tally 9
2. Go to Start > Programs > Tally 9 > TallyMigrateData
3. Click Migrate Data on the Tally Data Migration Tool screen
4. Specify the Data directory in the directory field and select the company from the List of Companies
5. Press Enter to accept and complete the migration of the selected company

Q5. What happens if I try to migrate a company from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9, more than once?
Answer: The following message displays if you try to migrate a company, which has already been migrated to Tally 9 from Tally7.2.
Warning!!! This company was already created by migration! If you start migration again, the created Tally 9 company
will be DELETED! (Press ‘Enter’ to Continue)

Q6. I have passed 100 voucher entries in Tally 9 after migrating data from Tally 7.2. If I try to migrate data once again, from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9, will I be able to retain the 100 entries made in Tally 9?
Answer: No. The data migration tool will delete the migrated company in Tally 9 and begin the migration process afresh.

Q7. Can I migrate Payroll data created in Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer:
Yes. When you migrate Payroll data created in Tally 7.2 to Tally 9, the Tally Data Migration Tool displays the following message
Information! This company has Payroll feature enabled! You need to follow a few post migration steps to configure Payroll

Q8. What are the post migration steps for Payroll data in Tally 9?
Answer:
After migrating Payroll data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9, you must carry out the following:

  • Reconfigure the Pay Heads and set the calculation criteria
  • Enter the Rates against the respective Pay Heads in the Salary Details screen of the Employees/Employee Groups in Tally 9.

By default, after migration, the Calculation type for all the Pay Heads migrated to Tally 9 changes to As User Defined Value.

Q9. How do I migrate Group Company data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer:
To migrate Group Company data:

  • Migrate each member company individually from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9
  • Recreate the Group Company in Tally 9 on successful migration of each of the member companies

Q10. When I migrated data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9, the data files in Tally 9 increased three times in size. Why did this happen? Will it affect the speed of Tally?
Answer: After migration, the size of the data files in Tally 9 increases on account of the increase in the size of the internal database. However, this does not affect the speed of Tally 9.

Q11. Where do I track the errors that occur while migrating data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer: Errors during the migration process are logged into an automatically generated file called migration.err. This file is found in the Tally 9 application folder.

Q12. How do I migrate TCP files from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9?
Answer:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Tally 9 > TallyMigrateData
2. Select Migrate TCP from the Migration Tool Menu
3. Once selected, the tool starts to process the Tally 7.2 TCP and generates another TCP, which is compatible with Tally 9
The migrated TCP files, which are suffixed with ‘9,’ are saved in the folder where the Tally 7.2 TCP files reside. They appear with the suffix 9 in the Tally.ini file also.
Note:
During the migration process, only the TCP files mentioned in the Tally.ini file of Tally 9 will be migrated from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9.

Q13. Can I upgrade Tally 6.3 data to Tally 9?
Answer: Yes, you can use the Tally Data Migration Tool to upgrade Tally 6.3 data to Tally 9.

Q14. After migrating data from Tally 7.2 to Tally 9 and passing vouchers using it, can I migrate the data back to Tally 7.2 and use the same?
Answer: No, you cannot migrate Tally 9 data back to Tally 7.2.

Q15. Will the TCP files, which have been migrated from Tally 7.2, work in Tally 9?
Answer: Yes, the migrated TCP files will work in Tally 9.

Q16. If I use .txt files for customisation coding, will the same work in Tally 9?
Answer: Yes, the .txt files will work in Tally 9.

Q17. Will I be able to migrate the .txt file (customisation file in text format)?
Answer:  No. The Tally Migration Tool allows the migration of TCP files only.

Q18. TCP files, which worked in Tally 6.3/ Tally 7.2, do not work after migration to Tally 9. What should I do?
Answer: If the customisation is a text file, then the same can be used directly in Tally 9. However, if the customisation is a TCP file, it needs to be migrated to Tally 9, using the Migration Tool.
If the customisation fails to work with Tally 9, then please contact the point of purchase.

Q19. Will the customisation file of Tally 5.4/ 6.3/ 7.2 work in Tally 9?
Answer: You need to migrate the customisation file from Tally 5.4 to Tally 6.3 and from Tally 6.3 to Tally 7.2. Compile the same into a TCP file and migrate it to Tally 9, using the Migration Tool.

    i used tally 7.2. unfortunately my administrator accoumt from my windows 7 pc got corrupted due to which i was forced to make a new account but in the new account when i open tally 7.2 the data made by me in the administrator account before is not displaying what should i do to get out of this the documents were very imp and i want it back in my tally 7.2 plz help

    i was using tally 5.4 but now i have taken a new laptop which does not support tally 5.4. so i took tally erp 9 but can not get my previous data to work with it. is there any specific way to do it. kindly help me as my work is getting delayed. i want all my companies in tally erp 9 as it was in tally 5.4. there should not be any data loss as it could cause great problem for me kindly help me out. help will be appreciated.

    I am using Tally 7.2 now I want to use Tally 9. I have installed Tally 9 (License version), I have Migrate all the Datas through Tally Data Migration and its shown successful migration of each companies then when I opened Tally 9 its showing the name of company but no data is inside (its showing no voucher entered) but in Tally 7.2 in the same company I have entered so many vouchers. Can you please suggest me how I will import the vouchers from Tally 7.2.
