Zydus Lifesciences Limited, a prominent pharmaceutical company based in Ahmedabad, India, has announced a significant milestone with the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) granting final approval for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for the Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System. This approval marks the product’s eligibility for a 180-day exclusivity period under the Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT) pathway, which is reserved for certain first-approved applicants.

The Estradiol and Levonorgestrel Transdermal System, which is a generic version of the Climara Pro® Transdermal System, is designed to treat moderate to severe symptoms associated with menopause and is also used for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The product will be manufactured at Zydus’s facility in Moraiya, near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The approval is expected to bolster Zydus’s presence in the US market, where the product recorded annual sales of approximately USD 45.7 million as of August 2026, according to IQVIA data.

This latest approval adds to Zydus’s robust portfolio of USFDA-approved products, bringing the total number of approvals to 458. The company has been proactive in expanding its footprint in the US market, having filed 516 ANDAs with the USFDA as of the end of September 2026. The CGT designation is particularly noteworthy as it underscores the USFDA’s recognition of the product’s potential to enhance market competition and provide more affordable treatment options for patients.

Analysts view this development as a strategic advantage for Zydus, given the competitive landscape of the US pharmaceutical market. The 180-day exclusivity period is anticipated to provide Zydus with a temporary market monopoly, potentially leading to significant revenue generation. This approval not only reinforces Zydus’s commitment to delivering high-quality generic medications but also highlights its capability to navigate complex regulatory pathways, positioning the company favourably in the global pharmaceutical industry.
