NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility, has entered into a strategic partnership with Africa50, a prominent investor in African infrastructure, to jointly develop power-generation projects and facilitate cross-border electricity trading across the African continent. The collaboration, formalised through a Cooperation Agreement, aims to leverage the strengths of both entities to advance commercially viable power projects, attract investment, and enhance the reliability of electricity supply for households and businesses in Africa.
The partnership will capitalise on NTPC’s extensive engineering and operational expertise, alongside Africa50’s project development and financing acumen. NTPC will focus on assessing project feasibility, developing viable solutions, and supporting the progression of identified opportunities towards implementation. Meanwhile, Africa50 will utilise its proprietary continental-scale pipeline and its strong connections with governments and regulators across its 34 African country shareholders to identify priority power projects, structure them for investment, and support their advancement throughout the project life cycles.
Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Combining NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent creates a strong foundation for supporting reliable power supply and regional electricity trade.” Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, highlighted the importance of reliable and competitively priced power in Africa’s industrial and economic transformation, noting that the partnership aims to strengthen regional power systems that support industrial growth, expand trade, and create jobs.
This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening investment partnerships between India and Africa, supporting the development of power infrastructure that is crucial for economic growth across the continent. The collaboration is poised to unlock new opportunities in the energy sector, contributing to the broader goal of sustainable development in Africa.
Analysts view this partnership as a strategic move that aligns with NTPC’s global expansion strategy and Africa50’s mission to mobilise capital for impactful infrastructure projects. The collaboration is expected to not only enhance energy access in Africa but also create a robust platform for future India-Africa collaborations in the infrastructure domain.
