Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on 1st May 2016. The aim behind the launching of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was to provide 50 million LPG [Liquified Petroleum Gas] connections to women of BPL (Below Poverty Line) families. Accordingly, the Yojana is likely to replace unclean cooking fuels, used mostly in the rural areas, with the clean and efficient LPG.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the beneficiary is eligible to receive INR 1,600 for each connection; refill of the cylinder and also interest free loan for purchasing a gas stove.

The present article highlights eligibility criteria; a list of documents required and steps for applying under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

Eligibility criteria under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-

For availing benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the applicant needs to satisfy the below mentioned criteria-

1. The applicant should be the citizen of India above the age of 18 years;

2. The applicant should be a woman belonging to BPL (Below Poverty Line) family;

3. The applicant should not be having LPG connection;

4. The applicant should not be availing of any other benefits under another similar scheme;

5. The name of the applicant should be included in the list of SECC 2011 [Socio Economic and Caste Census] or should be –

a. The beneficiary of PMAY – G [Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin]; or

b. The beneficiary of Antyodaya Anna Yojana; or

c. Holder of BPL ration card; or

d. Forest dwellers; or

e. Most Backward Classes; or

f. Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes; or

g. People residing in river islands.

Documents required under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-

Following is the list of documents required for applying under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-

1. BPL certificate as issued by either the panchayat Pradhan or the municipality chairman;

2. Caste certificate;

3. Recent passport size photograph (one);

4. One photo identity proof i.e., Aadhaar Card or Voter ID Card etc.;

5. One address proof i.e., Aadhaar Card or Voter ID Card or telephone/ electricity bill etc.

Steps for applying under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-

The beneficiary willing to obtain available benefits under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is required to follow the below steps for applying under the Yojana-

STEP 1 – The beneficiary should first collect the application form available at the nearest LPG distributor. Notably, instead of visiting the LPG distributor, one can also download the application form from the official website www.pmuy.gov.in;

STEP 2 – Properly fill up the application form;

STEP 3 – Submit the application form to the LPG distributor;

STEP 4 – The submitted application form will be processed and verified. LPG connection will be issued once the application is found to be appropriate.

    Living in a village, I can authoritatively say that the scheme is an utter failure in villages. Poor villagers cannot afford Rs1,000/- per Cylinder. and that too without subsidy. They have gone back to firewood plentily available in villages. A grandiose publicity stunt; that is all
