I attended a Seminar on Zero Defect, Zero Effect (ZED) Certification and Various Schemes of the Government for MSMEs recently  at Thane-Belapur Industries Association, Navi Mumbai.

Zero Defect, Zero Effect (ZED) literally means if your unit, be it manufacturing or service based, is in perfect shape conforming to various parameters, it has many advantages, like being eligible for discounted loans from financial institutions, zero impact on environment, etc.

Speakers were:

  • Sumant H. Mathure, ZED Master Trainer & Assessor by QCI
  • Manojkumar Singh, Zonal Manager, NSIC, Marol, Andheri
  • Khujnare, Asstt Director, MSME Devp & Facilitation Office, Andheri.

The concept of Zero Defect, Zero Effect, recently introduced by Govt of India is certification of management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure. It is an Indian version of ISO certification.  In ZED  Certification many parameters of ISO certification are adopted adding our own thinking.

All subsidies are now closed for ISO certification, now it is for ZED certification.

This is the brainchild of Quality Council of India which proposed this ZED in 2014.

There are three categories of ZED certification:

  • Bronze (has just 5 parameters)
  • Silver (has 14 parameters)
  • Gold (has 20 parameters)

There is no compulsion as to which category one can apply; If an entity is in a position to comply with 20 parameters it can apply for Gold category directly. The entity that gets Gold category of ZED certification can be termed as a world class producer.

But for a smaller entities like micro or SSI units it is advised to go for Bronze category which is the simplest to get ZED certification.

A ZED certification is given for three years. It has to be renewed if one wants to continue with it.

Cost involved for  getting a ZED certification:

  • Bronze category – Free
  • Silver category – Rs.50,000.-
  • Gold category – Rs.80,000.-

There is concession in fees for women entrepreneurs and the units in far eastern states.

As for now, ZED certification is rolled out only for manufacturing entities. It will be rolled out for service entities in future but no date is fixed as yet.
