The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has announced the annual observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ on 25th June. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the events of June 25, 1975, when the Emergency was declared, effectively stifling the spirit of Indian democracy. The Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, highlighted the significance of this observance, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who endured immense suffering during this dark period in India’s history.

On 25th June 1975, the then Prime Minister imposed a state of Emergency across India, marking a grim chapter in the nation’s democratic journey. The Emergency, which lasted until March 1977, saw the suspension of civil liberties, mass arrests of political opponents, and severe censorship of the press. This period is often described as one of the most challenging times for Indian democracy.

During the Emergency, millions of Indians were subjected to arbitrary arrests and detentions without trial. Political dissent was crushed, and the media was silenced through stringent censorship. This period witnessed widespread human rights abuses, including torture and forced sterilizations, as the government sought to control the population.

The decision to observe ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ annually is a tribute to those who fought against these oppressive measures and played a crucial role in the restoration of democracy. Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, in his post on the X platform, stressed that this day is meant to keep alive the memory of the struggle and sacrifices made by countless individuals who stood up against the authoritarian regime.

Shri Amit Shah articulated that the observance of this day is not only about remembering the past but also about ensuring that the lessons learned from this period remain embedded in the nation’s collective consciousness. By commemorating ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas,’ the government aims to prevent any recurrence of such undemocratic practices and to reinforce the values of individual liberty and democratic governance.

The annual observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will involve various activities and events aimed at educating the public about the significance of the Emergency period. These will include seminars, exhibitions, and discussions that highlight the stories of those who suffered and resisted the oppressive regime. Schools and educational institutions will also be encouraged to participate in these activities to instill the values of democracy and freedom in young minds.

The declaration of 25th June as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ is a significant step by the Government of India to honor the resilience and courage of those who fought against the Emergency. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic values and individual freedoms. By remembering this dark chapter in history, India reaffirms its commitment to democracy and ensures that the sacrifices made by millions are never forgotten. The annual observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will play a crucial role in educating future generations about the fragility of freedom and the importance of vigilance in preserving it.
