Notification No. 40 (RE-99), dated 7th December 1999, makes corrections to previous notifications (Nos. 22(RE-99) and 26(RE-99)) concerning the import of zinc and its related products. The revised Exim codes now specify the import conditions for various forms of zinc, including zinc ash, skimmings, and hard zinc spelter. For example, zinc ash containing more than 65% zinc and minimal lead and cadmium is categorized as “free” for import, with conditions that units must be registered with the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Conversely, zinc ash with higher levels of lead and cadmium, as well as zinc skimmings with lower zinc content, are classified as “restricted,” requiring an import license for processing or re-use under specific hazardous waste guidelines. These amendments are designed to ensure that the import of zinc and its derivatives is controlled in accordance with environmental and health safety standards.
