Kolkata, October 1, 2026: Coal India Limited (CIL) has reported a significant increase in coal supplies, rising by 12.5% to 61.20 million tonnes (MT) in September for the fiscal year 2026-27. This marks a substantial improvement from the 54.40 MT recorded during the same period in the previous fiscal year, driven by heightened demand from the power sector.

The power sector, a major consumer of coal, witnessed a robust growth in coal supplies, with an increase of 10.63% to 48.90 MT, up from 44.20 MT in the prior fiscal year. Additionally, coal supplies to the non-regulated sector (NRS) also saw a notable rise, growing by 19.41%, reflecting the overall surge in demand across various sectors.

In terms of production, CIL achieved a 9.18% increase in coal output, producing 53.50 MT in September compared to 49 MT in the previous year. This growth in production and supply is part of a broader trend observed in the second quarter (Q2) of the fiscal year, where CIL increased its coal supplies by 12.04% to 186.04 MT. The power sector alone received 148.20 MT during Q2, marking an 11% growth over the same period last year.

The company’s efforts have also resulted in the liquidation of approximately 63 MT of pithead coal stocks during the first half of FY 2026-27. With the conclusion of the monsoon season, CIL anticipates further increases in coal production and supply, aligning with its targets of 815 MT for production and 850 MT for supply for the current fiscal year.

Analysts note that CIL’s performance is crucial for ensuring energy security in India, particularly as the country navigates fluctuating energy demands. The company’s ability to ramp up production and supply amidst rising demand underscores its strategic importance in the energy sector. As the fiscal year progresses, market observers will be closely monitoring CIL’s capacity to meet its ambitious targets, which are pivotal for maintaining a stable energy supply across the nation.
