Mumbai: Investigations into the seizure of Rs 90 lakh during nakabandi by the MRA Marg police last week have revealed that the money was sent by commission agents who ran a courier service. The money was sent from Latur and Nanded to Mumbai.

The seized cash belonged to small-time businessmen who had given the money to the courier firm for delivery in Mumbai. “The police have written to the I-T department, telling them that if a person comes to claim the money in court, they should register a case against the claimant for evading tax and carrying such a huge amount of cash,” said inspector Sunil Babar.

During nakabandis on May 7 and 9, the police arrested five persons in two groups and seized Rs 44 lakh and Rs 46 lakh from them. The police said the suspects could not give a satisfactory explanation for carrying such a large amount. Though the youth claimed they were from Latur and Nanded and were going to `courier’ the money to an agency in Bhuleshwar, the police suspected foul play.
