Kolkata, Aug 16 (PTI) The West Bengal government today urged the Centre to reconsider the central excise duty of 10.3 per cent on branded garments and hosiery as announced in the budget.

“We have asked the Centre to reconsider the central excise duty of 10.3 per cent on branded garments and hosiery as it was affecting the viability of manufacturing units,” Minister for Textiles and Small-Scale industry Manas Bhunia said today.

But there was no response from the Centre as of now, he said at a CII interactive session.

Bhunia said the government would soon frame a policy for the textile sector to give fillip to the handloom and powerloom sectors in the state.

He also urged the textile units to take advantage of the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) available with the union textiles ministry.

The government would also encourage setting up of SME clusters in the state, he said.
