The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is working towards creating more number of company secretaries from rural and semi-urban areas in the east, Mamta Binani, the first lady chairperson of the Eastern India Regional Council of ICSI, said on Monday.

With the demand for company secretaries far outstripping the supply, ICSI is planning to expand its catchment area for potential company secretaries by focussing on semi-urban and rural areas.

After the government making it mandatory for any company having a paid-up capital of Rs 5 crore and above to have a company secretary, the demand for this profession is expected to rise with the economy growing at 8-9 per cent.

Till, now company secretaries were a relatively a urban phenomenon. “We want to change this urban orientation. Meritorious and hard-working students in semi-urban as well as villages can also become company secretaries. For someone who has completed 10+2 examination, the entire course can be completed in 3-4 years and he/she can begin a career in corporate laws,” Binani said.

To create awareness, the institute plans to engage career counsellors who can speak in vernacular languages. “Students can write exams in Hindi at present and depending on response this may be widened later. We will hold career awareness programme in semi-urban and rural educational institutions. ICSI Students Education Fund Trust also provides financial assistance for economically backward classes/students with good academic record,” she said.

This is a praiseworthy decision. A larger pool will provide of better quality of aspiring candidates and quality professional. My only submission to Mr. President of ICSI is that besides focussing on number pl also look inward for improving the quality of would be professionals. It is seen that the final passed students are not upto the expected stds. The ostensible reasons are lack of continuous and rigourous training. I have certain things to submit: (i) Mandotary managment training after passing intermediate groups. (ii) Eligibility for final attempt should only be after completion of at least twelve month of uninterrpted training. (iii) Traning Period must be at least 24 Months.

Hope the Central Council will take cognizance of this.

Its really a praiseworthy decision taken by the chairperson. bcz almost all professional institutes have ignored the values of the best professionals from semi urban.
Hope it will be implemented from Hazaribag ( jharkhand). We have a chapter of the institute in Hazaribag
