TAKING the taxpayers’ services to a higher level, the Income Tax Department has begun to provide credit statements which are available for viewing by taxpayers. A taxpayer can register for such a facility and can get information about the credits online for different AYs. To see this, a onetime registration is required. Detailed procedure for registration is available at http://www.tin-nsdl.com/panregistration.asp NSDL is going to send the statements to about 50 lakh taxpayers through e-mail.
The statement enables the taxpayers to verify whether the credits as claimed by them in the Income Tax Returns, filed for the corresponding year, match with the tax credits available in the attached statement. As advised, the tax credit available as per this statement would be relied by the ITD while giving tax credit at the time of processing of the Income Tax Returns. Hence absence of credit will bind the officer to disallow excess credit. Since the processing for Assessment Year 2008-09 is being taken up by Department, the taxpayer is advised to get the tax credit corrected at an early date to avoid disallowance.

The statement enables a taxpayer to take up the matter pertaining to any deficiency with the concerned deductor. In case of missing tax credit, the matter can be taken up with the deductors.

I received tax credit email from NSDL. To my utter horror, I found 5 deductors of TDS out of 8 have not given me tax credit. These include banks like SBI, Union, Oriental, Indian oversea and also Post offices.I contacted the deductor and brought the deficieny to their notice. they just brushed me aside just by saying that we
    have deposited due amount.
Tax payer has to rely on TDS certificates. System should work other way around. Tax payer provides TDS certtificates. INcome tax authorities should use this data to check whether deductor has really paid the deducted amount to Gocvernment.

This is not much use. some banks like SBI do not send the TDS credits (on FDs) to IT department on individual basis with PAN. They send a consolidated amount in the branch of the bank TIN. So these TDS will not be reflected in NSDL information. The appropriate authorities should send strict instructions on this account to the banks. Will somebody take it up with the Finance Minsitry.
    BTW I love your blog!
