CBDt has vide its press release dated 22.07.2013 clarified that exemption from filing return of income for salaried employees having total income upto Rs. 5 lakhs including income from other sources upto Rs. 10,000/- was only for assessment year 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively.  The exemption was given considering ‘paper filing of returns’ and their ‘processing through manual entry’ on system.

However, this year the facility for online filing of returns has been made user-friendly with the advantage of pre-filled return forms. These E-filed forms also get electronically processed at the central processing centre in a speedy manner. Hence, the exemption provided during the last two years is not being extended for assessment year 2013-14.

Retrun of excess tax deducted by DDOs to assessees from IT Deptt. is very very difficult. In many cases,it is not refunded. In my case, for example, for the AY 2006-07 & 07-08,the Deptt.slept over my request for Rs 3,000 [06-07]and Rs for like amount for the next AY [07-08].It all happened while I was in service at New Delhi. However,my inadvertent mistake while furnishing PAN # to my DDO,who filed my return in AY 2006-07 was pointed out through a letter with warning as per Act,was served to me in 2008 which I replied giving correct PAN #.So is the business in IT Deptt. It is,therefore, hard to expect anything from CBDT cosier to tax payers save becoming alert in one`s tax matter.

Q1] Pensioners having total income below Rs.5 lacs need to file return for AY2013-14?
Q2] If needed, shall e-filing suffices or paper filing is must?
Q3] Does the word “salaried” in the order include assessees` income from pension?

  3. Ravi says:

I have salaried income 5 lacs. shall i need file income tax return this year??

  4. parteek says:

I want to know e-filing is mandatory for which assessee .

  5. Ashish says:

CBDT says e-filed forms get processed quickly. however returns and refunds of last year (AY 12-13) are still pending in case of many assesses. Will CBDT concentrate on providing better facilities to existing filers before wooing new filers.
