This is perhaps the first time an officer arrested for corruption went to office on release from custody—an act considered as violation of rules. On October 25, income tax commissioner Ajoy Kumar Singh was arrested on corruption charges and on October 30, a day after his release on bail, he reported to work at his Nagpur office.

According to the Central Civil Services Rules, a public servant, if in custody for 48 hours, is automatically suspended. The CBI took up the matter with the finance ministry and after a long battle, his suspension orders were issued by the government on Friday.

CBI officials said they would ensure that Ajoy does not report to work from Saturday.

“After his arrest, we had informed his seniors and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). We also enclosed a copy of the FIR. We followed it up with his seniors as well as the CBDT. But the seniors allowed him to continue with the job,” a CBI official said.

CBI will book Ajoy in a fresh case of misconduct. It has written to CBDT, asking the board to take action against senior officials. CBI sources said Ajoy, while reporting to work, told his seniors that his absence be treated as `on leave’. “We have information that he not only entered Nagpur office but also worked,” a CBI official said.
