Many people are not aware about that their Income Tax Refund status. The Refund status can be easily ascertained online with a few simple and easy steps. The ‘Refund Banker Scheme’, which was first introduced by the Income Tax Department in Jan 2007, can be used by tax payers all over the nation to view the exact status of their refunds on line at the site. The only requirement is PAN No to view the status.

MODES OF REFUND

Tax refunds whenever applicable is made in 2 different means to all the tax payers:

RTGS/NECS:

In order to enable direct credit of the refund amount to the bank account of the tax payer, the taxpayer’s correct bank A/c (at least 10 digits), MICR/ IFSC code of the bank branch and required communication address is mandatory.

PAPER CHEQUE:

The standard paper cheques wherever issued require the current bank account no and the correct address of the tax payer as mandatory information.

CHECKING STATUS ONLINE

One needs to do is to enter the PAN number and the assessment year on the below mention link site to access the current position of the tax refund.

This simple task can be achieved through 2 easy steps:

Log into https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html and enter your PAN and assessment year. Then click on Submit button.

The same can also be checked through the toll free number of SBI help desk at 18004259760 or even through email to itro@sbi.co.in or refunds@incometaxindia.gov.in or even you can call helpline centre if IT department 18001801961 or 18004252229

TYPES OF STATUS ONLINE

While checking your refund status online you are likely to see several kinds of status messages on the website. Below are some of the common types of status messages that may appear at the website. Other status messages depending on the actual state of processing and disparities noticed by the department may also appear. The assessee has the right to appeal and notify the department in case of any discrepancies noticed at the status on the website for further action.

REFUND PAID:

If the refund has already been credited to your bank account by NEFT / CHEQUE. You need to check that you have receive the refund else you need to immediately follow up in case you have not received.

NO STATUS:

In cases where the AO has not processed your return. No status change will be displayed. Only following message will be shown “Your assessing officer has not sent this refund to Refund Banker or  If this refund has been sent by your Assessing Officer within the last week, you may wait for a week and again check statusâ€

CHANGE OF ADDRESS:

Incase the address of the assessee has changed and same has not been notified to the Income Tax Department through the online registration system, the refund cheque normally returns back and this is reflected in the status at the website. Such cases of cheques are quite common despite the fact that the refund cheques are dispatched on time by the department.

CHEQUE ENCASHED STATUS:

If the assessee has received the refund cheque and has encashed it then the status at the website will reflect the same. However in case the cheque has actually not been encashed but is being reflected as so at the website then one needs to immediately inform the department

IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE NOTED

There are a few points that one needs to understand while checking tax refund status online:

  • The Income tax Department has nominated the State bank of India (SBI) as the refund purpose and for all such transactions. SBI forwards all the refund cheques or online transfers.
  • RTGS/ NECS/ ECS transfers are possible only if the 10 digit account number has been correctly provided by the assessee along with the IFSC code of the bank or MIRC as required in online filing / offline information. Else standard cheques or demand drafts will be dispatched to the address provided.
  • The online status is updated for viewing only after a period of 10 to 15 days of the assessing officer having made the refund either online or by dispatching the cheque.
  • The refund status will be available only if the tax return has been filed correctly and on time and has been received by the department.
  • Filing Returns online through facilities of the Income tax Department is a great advantage as it helps in quick processing of refund and its less time consuming.
  • It must be noted that the online refund is faster and quicker if the return has been filed on time and preferably through online filing system.
  • In cases were returns are filed offline and refund is pending long due for more than 2 years. We need to visit our AO with all the details of Return File / Taxes Paid / Copy of Form 26AS, etc. In past we have seen once we communicate to AO of non receipt of refund we usually get it processed within 1 or 2 months.

As an NRI, I gave my Mother India an opportunity to use my money for the betterment of society in India. I especially enjoyed sending millions of US dollars to investment vehicles in India, not just for the sake of earning high interest, but for the purpose of helping those powers in India to actually improve conditions and make India great economically on a global scale. But the last 2 years have shown me how corrupt things still are in India. They are quick to take 30.9% TDS, but are slow to return refunds. I have been waiting a year now to receive a refund and it is very unprofessional of a governmental body to be holding OPM for unnecessary long periods. I went from patience to panic to anger to withdrawal. Now I just don’t care. I’ve already sold 80% of my investments and repatriated that money back to the US. Let’s not talk about how difficult that was! Unbelievable how clingy India is to other people’s money! They should be ashamed of themselves. My trust in the Indian system is broken, and now I am in the process of selling the remaining 20% of my holdings in India. It’s just incredibly ridiculous that the powers in India can be so arrogant, treating people like their money is not theirs! And as I read all these posts by people who are living their lives at the mercy of a foreign government, it makes me both laugh and shake my head. My fellow Indians, it’s unforgivable, unacceptable and outrageous. We shouldn’t have to beg for our own money. In any event, I hope you all figure out what you want to do. I’ve moved on.

I have not yet received ITR-Refund (2012-13) yet at my PAN updated residential address… I had many time approached concerned dealing hand Officer at IT Office-Chandigarh personally and also submitted application with complete detail including my updated residential address and exixting Salary Bank Account, through postal services, along with attached photocopies of PAN CARD Xerox, Employee ID Card Xerox, Aadhaar Card Xerox, etc.

But, all my effort goes in vain, without any result… even after submitting application for the first time with updated residential address and exixting Salary Bank Account personally at IT Office Chandigarh with dealing officer, they took too much time delivering Refund Cheaque… and when I checked the Refund Status it shows that the refund cheaque is in process of postal delivery, which I haven’t received yet…

Please help me to recover my ITR-Refund (2012-13)… Pan No. BFQPS4145Q

  28. rugram says:

While this facility is useful in those cases where the ITO has processed the Return and prepared/paid the refund amount, what is most important is for the I-T Dept. to show online the status of processing of the Return after filing. Years pass before the Return is processed and action on refund taken. The Dept. should show the progress of assessment in a manner similar to that of tracking speed post articles (though not in such details). This would help an assessee tremendously to know where their assessment stands.
The author says that refunds are received 1 or 2 moths after representation to the ITO. (That too after waiting for 2 years after filing a Return.) I beg to differ. My Return was assessed but refund was withheld for over 4 years, despite personally meeting the ITO several times, and giving written complaints every year. Finally, I had to take recourse to an RTI application (on the lines of a very useful article on this subject that appeared in taxguru.in) and got the refund in one month. In another case, the ITO wrote back saying that the Return papers are not available in the office and so no details sought in the RTI application (of refund made) could be provided!

  29. Bala says:

Refund has been issued to me but the account number mentioned therein was closed. I have returned the refund cheque along with a letter and cancelled cheque leaf of running account to the CPC, Bangalore. How much time it will take for reissue of the refund to the new account?

Dear Chirag Chauhan Instead of this you may please give information on

NO STATUS: In cases where the AO has not processed your return. No status change will be displayed. Only following message will be shown “Your assessing officer has not sent this refund to Refund Banker or If this refund has been sent by your Assessing Officer within the last week, you may wait for a week and again check statusâ€

How to e-correspond with AO who is holding back refund and on what grounds
