An Income Tax Department Officer at Guntur was on Thursday arrested by CBI while allegedly taking a bribe.

G. Venkatswara Rao was arrested by the CBI, Visakhapatnam branch when he accepted Rs 25,000 from a person for not demanding a tax payment, the central agency said.
The complainant, who works as sales manager at a bakery in Guntur, said that IT Authorities had summoned him after a survey of the establishment.

When he visited the IT office, Rao informed him that an amount of Rs 15 lakh was payable as tax over a land sale transaction, but the matter would be closed if he paid bribe of Rs 3 to 4 lakh.

The bribe amount was later knocked down to Rs 25,000, plus a high-end mobile handset.

A trap was set after the complainant approached CBI.
