Clarifications regarding exemptions in a paper(s) in CA Examinations – (17-10-2016)

Certified copies of answer books in respect of CA examinations are being made available to those candidates who apply for the same, under the scheme formulated for the purpose.

It is seen that upon receipt of certified copies of answer books, some candidates notice that in some papers, marks awarded to them on the answer books are at variance with those on the statement of marks issued to them and seek clarifications.

In this connection, it is hereby clarified that

  • Variance of marks between those on the answer books and those on the statement of marks issued to candidates is on account of revision of marks by the Examination Committee, under regulation 39(2) of the CA Regulations, 1988 prior to declaration of results of the examination;
  • Such revision is taken into consideration while processing the results and the revised marks are shown on the statement of marks;
  • Such revised marks are not indicated on the answer books of the candidates and
  • Marks in the statement of marks issued to candidates are final.

Therefore, candidates are hereby advised to be guided only by the marks/exemptions that are indicated in the statement of marks issued to them, which may include the revision of marks, if any, that might have been effected by the Examination Committee under regulation 39(2) of the CA Regulations 1988 and not by the marks on the copies of answer books, which do not include the revision of marks, if any, effected by the Examination Committee.

Further, it is hereby informed that exemptions, if any, granted to a candidate in an examination are indicated on the statement of marks by way of a “ # “ sign against the marks of the paper in which exemption is granted and in such cases, where a candidate is granted exemption, the result of the group would be shown as “F-EX”, i.e. failed with exemption.

Candidates are advised to take note of the above and verify the status of exemptions, if any, that they think that they had been granted in a paper, from the statement of marks sent to them and not on the basis of marks stated on the certified copies of answer books.

Further candidates may also visit www.icai.org and read the FAQs on the subject, hosted thereon.

Exemptions granted to candidates valid for the November 2016 exams are also hosted on http://icaiexam.icai.org.

Candidates are advised, in their own interest, to visit the website and check the status of their exemptions valid for the exams to be held in November 2016.

    Why Icai does so much injustice, 95% of studentsunami who caught in this will never forgive to icai, on the day he become CA. Whenever he will become president of ICAI will do worst than that. Whenever he will kept any article will do the same injustice. When 95% of students would critics and suggest to Thierry friends and relatives such fact about uncertainty after 5 year of hardest labour & 5%would praise,would it be a good advertisement of ICAI I don’the know but it is sure icai itself will do get traded the holl which he digged down.

    It means the CA degree is much more depend on the luck of candidate instead of study. No doubt study is man factor but you can not pass the CA exam without your favouring stars or luck or whatever.

    CA COURSE IS A WELL REPUTED COURSE WHERE IN ANY KIND OF INFLUENCE OR PROMINENCE GIVEN TO ANY CANDIDATE. COMPARING ANSWER WITH SUGGESTED ANSWERS IS MEANINGLESS SINCE VALUATION PROCESS HAS NOT BEEN UNDERSTOOD BY STUDENTS. INSTITUTE SPECIFIES NORMS ON THE BASIS OF WHICH EXAMINER CAN AWARD MARKS. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS NOW A DAYS COACHING INSTITUTIONS CANVAS STUDENTS MAKING THEM BELIEVE THAT IT IS SIMPLE TO PASS OR 100% PASS. STUDENTS ALSO TAKE THE COURSE AS THAT OF DEGREE. ONLY 100% DEVOTED STUDENTS WILL PASS AND I HAVE EXPERIENCE OF THE SAME VERY WELL. THOSE WHO HAVE STUDIED WELL, HAVE PASSED. KEEPING THE LIMITATIONS OF A MEMBER I STILL WISH THE SUCCESS..

    The ICAI system for conducting the Examinations has been lauded by all. The new provision for supply of certified copies of answer sheets to the candidates enabled us to wake up to the many malpractices. one such case happened with one of my relatives in the Information Systems paper.

    I was astonished to find out that the examiner seems to be a 7th standard student whose hand writing etc spoke volumes. despite giving very accurate answers for all the questions, he simply put 1 or 2 after each answer.

    After carrying the awarded marks to the summary sheet, the candidate was given 29 marks by the examiner. However, the marks given in the marks sheet were 30.

    I personally compared the answers of the candidate with those in the suggested answers and realised what an injustice was meted out to the candidate. As per my assessment the candidate could have got not less than 58 in that paper.

    Due to this incident the candidate failed in both the groups of the Final examination in that attempt. That was the last attempt upto which no appeals were allowed by the ICAI.

    The candidate had to suffer the ignominy of failure for no fault of her, recover and regroup to toil and pass in the next attempt both groups.

    I am writing this to highlight the things especially in evaluation of IT related papers where this has been the order of the day; no serious thought is being applied rectify these bad practices.

    I have experienced it myself. I have lost my exemption due to this. I can prove anyone providing my answer copies. Stop supporting ICAI. it’s playing with Student’s time and feelings. anything lost can be earned but not time.

  6. Prateek says:

    This is already known. I have experienced this personally. My marks as per answer sheet was 40 while in the marks sheet it was 50. This upward revision of marks Moby ICAI was accepted by them. I haven’t come across anybody who have their marks revised downwards though.

  7. Srikanth says:

    I agree, this not fair. The basic source document i.e., answer sheet for awarding the marks doesn’t justify the revision of marks which is reflected on the statement of marks, on what basis correction and revision is being done is a question mark for the Students.

  8. Goutam Sharma says:

    Ok. It was expected, this is why the Institute opposed to the policy of providing answer sheets initially. It is nothing but mis use of Power. If it is in the vested interest of the whole CA Profession, then why don’t they make it a competitive exam. Declare the no of seats available and then conduct the exams.

  9. SATISH VERMA says:

    The provision is subject to misused by vested interest in ICAI. The uniformity between answer books and statement of marks should be assured.

  10. Sundaresan says:

    This is not fair. You have asked the candidate to write the exam in the answer sheet and the answer sheet is evaluated by an examiner chosen by you and every mark given in that answer sheet is substantiated with the answer the candidate has given and the model answer the head examiner has given to the examiner. If any change is done by the committee on whatever basis it has to be marked in the answer script against the specific answers where the changes are suggested. Otherwise the entire system is flawed and goes againt the principle of natural justice and transparency. The explanation from the institute should also state under what circumstances, the changes are done by the committee and what supporting documents are prepared as a audit trail and why that cannot be shared with the candidate
