The title of this article is not only mesmerizing but also very true and worth knowing. Let us start with one of my favourite quotes of Steve Jobs- “We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?” Magnificent, isn’t it?

Decision making is something which one cannot avoid at any cost. Decisions, or the lack of them, are responsible for the breaking or making of many a career. Individuals who have become very proficient at making decisions, without being influenced by the opinions of others, are the same people whose annual incomes fall into the six and seven figure category. We are required to make decisions at every stage of life, for example: Love them or Leave them, Quit or Stay, Continue or discontinue, whether to go for that job or business opportunity which ensures our professional and financial growth (which would also need more hard work or discomfort, at times, for sure) or not. Every decision comes up with its own consequences and our life is reflection of your decisions.

“Successful people make decisions quickly and firmly. Unsuccessful people make decisions slowly and change them often.”

-Napoleon Hill (Author of the great book ‘Think and Grow Rich’)

Those who reach decisions quickly and firmly know what the want and generally get it. This is one of the qualities of a leader which makes them a leader.

Now decision making depends upon:

  • Self-Image
  • Self confidence
  • Vision
  • Circumstances
  • Facts and information

Self-Image -Self-Image is not what we see when we stand in front of mirrors but what we think of ourselves in our minds. Proficient decision makers have one thing in common, i.e., a very strong self-image. They are not afraid of making decisions or facing failures but learn from every experience which enhances their overall personality. One can always improve his/her self-image by focusing on our talents, our intellect and our abilities (keep in mind to not let negativity come around). Every person has qualities for sure but just fails to recognise them. Recognise yours and wonder how it can change your life.

Self-confidence -This again comes from a strong self-image. Better the self-image, more the self-confidence and better the decision making.

Vision -Vision of a better way of life, will surely improve quality of our thoughts with better perspective of situations around, directly influencing our capacity of making better decisions. One must have a clear vision of their lives. So where do you want to see yourself in next 1 year, 5 year or 10 years. Get that vision and start reaching there today. You just have to decide!!

Circumstances – How often have you caught yourself saying, “I would like to do or have this but I can’t because…” Whatever follows “because” is the circumstance. Circumstances may cause a detour in your life but you should never permit them to stop you from making important decisions. Circumstances never remain the same. They are meant to change. So just imagine how our decision can give us desired results in light of favourable circumstances and go with that decision.

Facts/Information – Let us not get influenced by the opinions of others, newspapers and the gossiping while making decision for ourselves. We all have a mind of our own and surely we will be needing facts/information to reach our goals which we can acquire from other people without disclosing them our purpose. Let us do less of talking and more of listening for acquiring needed information.

Had Wright Brothers not decided to follow their vision of inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful airplane, then we would have surely missed adventure of flying in air and reaching to our destinations within no time safely. So, this is the importance of decision making.

With this great power of decision making, not only our incomes can grow but also it will have an astounding effect on our heath, family relations, social relations and every aspect of our life.

“When you make a decision to quit, you make a decision to fail.”

Happy to find the spark in you and your welcome decision to write about leadership, for this is not only less understood, may be not less available, but for sure less practiced and hardly encouraged. It has indeed been distorted by our very leaders who are becoming examples of “what not to be” and had driven the word “leader” into a slur. Keep that good work going. Such appearances are seldom found and rarely enforced.
