Cost Inflation Index meaning and Index for all the years

It is a measure of inflation that finds application in tax law, when computing long-term capital gains on sale of assets. IT dept plans new measures to curb tax evasion

The Income Tax department plans to immediately capture on receipt the data of returns filed by taxpayers to enhance their investigation and enforcement action to curb tax evasion and reduce tax gap over the next few years. The department is also mooting developing a 'criminal investigation' system within its establishment to combat terror financing, money laundering, offshore tax evasion and other illegal trades which impact national security.

Clarification regarding filing of Objections before Dispute Resolution Panel (DRP)

A new section 144C was inserted in the Income-tax Act, 1961 vide Finance (No. 2) Act of 2009. Section 144C provides for constitution of a Dispute Resolution Panel (DRP) to decide cases of an eligible assessee as defined in sub-section (15) of section 144C of the Income-tax Act. The Dispute Resolution Panel Rules were notified vide SO No. 2958 (E) dated 20th November 2009.

CBDT extends date for filing ITR-V form to 31.03.2010 or 120 days from filing of return, whichever is later

Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to extend the time limit for filing ITR-V form relating to income-tax returns filed electronically (without digital signature) on or after 1st April 2009, up to 31st March 2010 or within a period of 120 days from the date of uploading of the electronic return data, whichever is later. The ITR-V form should continue to be sent by ordinary post to Post Bag No.1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru – 560100 (Karnataka).

Delhi High Court in the case of Messe Dusseldorf India Pvt. Ltd. Income tax evaders are being pushed into an increasingly tight corner – the I-T department is planning restructuring that will help assessing officers spend more time on an assessee than they do now. Currently in Mumbai, an assessing officer, the individual who actually detects tax evasion after going through the assessee’s files, scrutinises an average of 400 cases a year.
