Revenue Department wants excise duty, octroi, purchase tax, local, alcoholic beverages and petroleum products under the ambit of GST

The Revenue Department has submitted its comments on the goods and services tax discussion paper, which was released by the State Finance Minister’s Committee on November 10. It wants excise duty, octroi, purchase tax, and local taxes to be brought under the GST ambit, along with alcoholic beverages and petroleum products. The department has agreed to levy GST plus excise duty on tobacco products.

Date for rolling out of GST could be announced on January 8

The date for rolling out the Goods and Services Tax could be announced on January 8, the Chairman of the Empowered Committee on State Finance Ministers, Asim Dasgupta, said today. "There will be a joint statement after a meeting with Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on January 8 on GST rollout," Dasgupta told reporters on the sidelines of the 23rd industrial trade fair, organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

PM panel in favour of one GST slab at central level for both Goods and services

Maharashtra taxman wants GST to be implemented from April 2011 instead of April 2010

He said that the white paper proposes that the Central GST and State GST, that is CGST and SGST, will be concurrently administered by the centre and the state. Mr. Bhatia seems to believe that this will lead to immense confusion because it means that for every transaction, every dealer has to go to two authorities.
