Country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has decided to abolish pre-payment charges on home loans, giving some succour to borrowers who want to foreclose their accounts. SBI has decided to do away with the pre-payment charges on all kinds of housing loans with immediate effect. The bank has been charging pre-payment penalties only on housing loans with floating interest rates taken before May 2011.

Country's largest bank SBI has breached RBI's credit exposure norms during three consecutive years with regard to its loans provided to Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL). The public sector lender, which also has significant exposures to troubled Air India besides certain telecom firms being probed in relation to the 2G scam, has now disclosed that its credit to RIL was in excess of the limits prescribed under the RBI's prudential credit norms.

Karnataka today became the first state in the country to launch an e-payment system for commercial tax payers. Speaking at the launch, Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Shyamala Gopinath wanted such a system to be adopted by other states.
