Cyber experts have warned Internet users of phishing scamsters who are luring people with government domain names and sending unscrupulous e-mails to collect financial and personal information. Mail boxes of people are being hit by an e-mail sent from ref.init@incometaxindia.gov.in, informing them of a tax refund pending with the department which can be collected by entering their financial and bank-related information by clicking on a given hyperlink in the mail.

India’s biggest software exporter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became a victim of cyber attack on Sunday, after the company’s website was hacked and the domain name was put up for sale. While in the recent past, hackers have attacked top government websites, including telecom regulator’s trai.gov.in, this is the first time a large IT company’s website has been hacked.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) was chasing tax evaders so far. Now they have to deal with hackers too as incidents of fraudulent tax refunds were detected involving at least Rs 4 crore from the Income Tax Department, Mumbai with CBDT planning to put in place a more robust and foolproof system for handling high value refunds.
