IT department raid on CA unearthed money laundering racket running into over Rs 1,000 crore

The income tax (IT ) department in a raid on a chartered accountant (CA) last week unearthed a money laundering racket running into over Rs 1,000 crore. The CA, Mukesh Choksi, through his several companies generated fake bills showing share transactions in the name of his customers who wanted to convert their black money into white. The department also recovered a pay order of 1 million and came across another onetime transfer of Rs 10 crore in a private bank account.

IT department facing criticism for showing national flag in its advertisement

A Mumbai-based social worker has threatened to press charges against the I-T department for placing ads in various newspapers, which allegedly disrespect the national flag. According to Sundeep Sharma , the advertisement, which urges people to pay advance tax, shows a child saluting the national flag with his left hand .

Payment to accredited ad agencies no commission

The Kolkata Income-Tax Tribunal has held that payment made by an assessee company to accredited advertising agencies could not be termed as payment of commission, and accordingly no TDS is required to be deducted under the provisions of section 194-H of the Income-Tax Act, 1961.
