The Union Cabinet today approved the proposal to introduce a Bill to amend the Copyright Act, 1957. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has proposed the amendments in order to gain clarity, remove operational difficulties and to address the newer issues that have emerged in the context of digital technology and the internet.

Govt. may provide Interest subsidy on education loan to student from weaker section for moratorium period

Ministry of Human Resource Development has proposed to introduce a scheme for full interest subsidy during the period of moratorium on loans taken by students belonging to economically weaker sections from the banks under the Education Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) for pursuing any of the approved courses of studies in technical and professional streams from recognised institutions in India.

Under the Revised Copyright Act one song may cost 1.50 lakh to Broadcasters

Asking for transparency in functioning, leading broadcasters like Zee TV, STAR, Sony and others have taken a strong objection to a proposed move by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) to amend the existing Copyright Act without consulting them. Under the proposed changes, even news broadcasters may also have to cough up a similar amount for every telecast of matches and old clippings.

The government is planning to permit corporate houses to set up higher educational institutions -- like multi-disciplinary universities and colleges -- by floating a separate not-for-profit entity under Section 25 of the Companies Act 1956.
