Maharashtra government on Wednesday exempted transfer of copyrights of a film -- relating to the exhibition in theatres -- from VAT. This was announced in the Legislative assembly during the State budget presentation, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar. He said VAT was currently levied on transfer of copyright of films for the purpose of exhibition in theatres.

One thing is sure. Indian government is very creative and full of ideas when it comes to imposition of new taxes on common man. Whether it’s FBT, STT, BCTT, DDT or many more taxes, some of which taxed even twice the same income. Now Maharashtra government is planning to impose 'entertainment tax' on caller tunes.

Maharashtra Government has imposed capital value-based system to calculate property tax on buildings, lands, houses and establishments across the state. The new system has been put in effect since April 27. “The property tax would be calculated on capital value-based system for all the Municipal Corporations, Councils and local bodies,” an official from the Urban Development Department told.

To give effect to the Budget proposals, a Bill (Legislative Assembly Bill No. XIV of 2009) to amend the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1975 was introduced in the Legislature. The said Bill has been passed by both the houses of the Legislature. The Act is now published in the Maharashtra Government Gazette dated 27th June 2009.

Objecting to the Maharashtra government’s decision of removing the audit limit for non-CAs government-authoris ed auditors, the accounting regulator Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has urged to restore the audit limit of Rs 1 lakh at the earliest. No audit limit enables the auditors to perform audit of trusts of any size.
