Harbhajan Singh receives notice for not paying service tax on his income

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been sent a notice by the central excise and taxation department for not the paying service tax on his income. According to the officials of central excise and taxation department here, Harbhajan has not paid the service tax on his income in the first and second seasons of IPL.
Harbhajan is part of the Mumbai Indians and has not paid service tax of Rs.1.15 crore (Rs. 11.5 million) on his income through promotional campaigns for the franchise.
“We had got reports about the irregularities in the submission of service tax by Harbhajan Singh. Our department has calculated this service tax under the business support services category. A notice has been sent at Harbhajan’s residence,” said an official of central excise and taxation department, Ludhiana.
Harbhajan resides in Jalandhar city of Punjab which comes under the jurisdiction of central excise and taxation department, Ludhiana.
“There are two other cricketers of Punjab, who have not paid service tax out of their income from first two editions of IPL. We would also send notices to them in the coming days,” said the official.
The central excise department (Chandigarh region) had slapped a fine of Rs. 15 million (Rs. 1.5 crore) on another Punjab cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, last year.
