House Rent Allowance (HRA) Calculator calculates House Rent Allowance which is exempt from tax U/s. 10(13A) of The Income Tax Act, 1961. The calculator is in excel format and it calculates the allowance which will be exempt from tax automatically.

It is to be noted that as per  CIRCULAR NO. 8/2013, Dated: Dated: October 10, 2013  if annual rent paid by the employee exceeds Rs 1,00,000 per annum, it is mandatory for the employee to report PAN of the landlord to the employer. In case the landlord does not have a PAN, a declaration to this effect from the landlord along with the name and address of the landlord should be filed by the employee.

My Question is the above amount paid by LIC is it taxable or not ? or it i e exempt U/s.10 D of the I.T.Act,1961. If the such amount paid under survival benefit what amount is taxable ? Sir,

the calculator for HRA exemption is work out is correct when computed Annually.

Guys….. Like to add on this
This calculator should be used only when Monthly salary (Basic+DA+HRA), Rent paid & stay in same metro/non metro city is unchanged during the FY year.

As per Income tax act, this exemption of HRA is worked on monthly & cummulative of monthly will be treated as Annual HRA exemption.

Thus this calculator will reflect incorrect HRA exemption in following case
    1) Employee changing employer thus chaging monthly basic, DA, HRA
    2) Employee rent paid is monthly is changed during the year
    3) Employee shifted to owned house from rented house during the year resulting no rent payment in some month during the FY

Hope Mr Pranab Agrees and confirm to plot monthly calculator else make a note of such concern to the user.

PS incorrect exemption computation & claim may impact tax excess payment else shortage i.e. evasion

    Be careful…

  10. SANJAY KULSHRESTHA says:

    Dear Sir,

I am working with a Private organization.I have my own accommodation which is located nearer to my workplace for which i took loan from the bank & i am availing exemption on Home Loan amount. But i am residing in a rented house for which i am not not getting any Rent receipt from the Landlord as per our mutual verbal agreement. But at the same time, i am paying a fixed amount of money to my mother who is residing in our parental house which is in Agra as Rent. And this amount will be paid to her as House rent because it was our family decision to pay a sum of money to the mother for her routine expenses till she is alive. Moreover, she doesn’t have any other source of income & on behalf of us she is presently caring for the property & this property will be ours after her.

    Now, we have below mentioned queries;

    1) We want to take Home loan benefit
    2) We want to show Rented income from our own property
    3) We want to have HRA benefit which we are paying to our mother.
    4) We have also spent Rs.70,000 for the treatment of my father during the year but unfortunately he expired. Is there any clause to exempt the same.
    5) We had few Fixed Deposits in the bank which were withdrawn before the maturity date in order to raise money for my father’s treatment whose interest was around Rs. 15,000. Can we show this amount as income?

Kindly provide us your valuable guidelines.

    Thanks / Sanjay Kulshrestha

I am a government servant employed in regular capacity in an autonomous organization of the Govt of India. I reside in government accommodation provided by the organization. As such I do not receive HRA from the organization. My wife also joined the same organization as a contractual employee. The advertisement for the post on which she joined or her appointment letter do not carry any mention about HRA component in the consolidated pay offered to her for the post. Now after 4 months of her joining, she is told that as she shares the government accommodation being provided to me, HRA is liable to be deducted from the consolidated salary being paid to her. Is this justified? Can anyone help me with relevant OMs/circulars?

I have found this site very useful

am a NRI/NRO and am currently residing in the UK for the last few years. I own a flat in Mumbai for which I receive Rs 54,000 per month.

It is my understanding that as an NRI if the rental income exceeds 2 lakhs per month then one is liable for tax. I have now been told that the Rs 2 lakhs is for each financial year.
I would appreciate if you would kindly let me know if the Indian authorities would penalize me and what would be the penalty fee. Also if there is a way around it as I do not want to get into any kind of trouble with the law.
I have been asked by my current tenant to submit my PAN CARD DETAILS. As a NRE/NRO is one permitted to be in possession of a PAN CARD??? Please advise My e mail address is mina_rodricks@hotmail.com

  22. Neeraj Rastogi says:

Calculator is not correctly prepared. In case rent paid is less than 10% of salary, it is adding negative amount also in taxable amount. Please ask author to correct it and put logic functions also to remove anomaly..
